University of New Hampshire student and organizer, Bella Dziak, is working towards increasing food security on her school’s campus.
1) What are you working on now—the change you are feeling the most urgency around making in the world through your organizing?
My team and I are working towards increasing food security for students who utilize the dining halls at University of New Hampshire. We are requesting our administration change the mandatory unlimited meal plan option for those living in dorms on campus. Many people who have dietary restrictions due to allergies, religion, and ethics are unable to value their meal plan. Students have shared their stories about the lack of quality and nutrition in the “allergen friendly” sections and how some students are constantly sick from the food. We hope that creating more options for students to decide whether or not they want the dining plan will lead into our second goal, which is pushing for better and more balanced meal options for students with allergies.
2) If you could give a new organizer one piece of guidance, what would it be?
Go into your team meetings and projects with an open-mind. Working on a campaign takes patience and strategy. Listening to your team and being creative with next-steps and action is super important and helps ensure everyone is heard. Having an open-mind will help you learn from each outcome and each encounter with others.
3) When times are tough, what is your go-to for getting “back on the bike?”
Spending time in nature! Whether it’s running, hiking, or just stepping out for some fresh air nothing grounds me more than being surrounded by all the beautiful life growing in the sunlight.
4) What’s your favorite Wild moment?
My favorite Wild moment was at the training last July [2022] when we named the “Youth Empowerment Project” and Madysen began a chant that brought the whole room together. The energy was unmatched, and I can assure you everyone in the room was smiling. It was a very empowering and fun moment.
5) What’s a fun fact about you?
I have a passion for gardening and hope to bring the joys of growing veggies to others.
